Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli was the victim of horrific racist abuse after he joked on Twitter about Manchester United losing to Leicester CityI believe when one wants to hurl insults at another you should do it intelligently so as not to appear as an ignorant fool.News flash!!!! The 24-year-old was the target of the racist abuse after he tweeted about United losing 5-3 to newly promoted Premier League side.

After the shock result the Italian forward joked on Twitter: "Man utd ... LOL".

But within minutes Balotelli was sent a barrage of horrifying and vile messages about his race.

One person tweeted an expletive filled message that hurled abuse at Balotelli about the ebola virus and bananas.

While others incredibly called the Reds star a "monkey" and a "n*****".

Football journalist Gabriele Marcotti posted a screenshot of a small amount of the racist abuse the striker was faced with.

But he tweeted this was not reflective of the views held by the majority of Manchester United fans.

He posted: "Shouldn't have to state obvious but fact that fools decided to racially abuse @FinallyMario not reflection on MUFC or bulk of fans".

Balotelli has been the victim of racist abuse a number of times in the past.

Earlier this year the striker was called a "f****** n*****" while training in Italy by one of his country's own fans prior to the World Cup.

While last year during a match at his former club AC Milan's stadium Balotelli was the target of horrifying monkey chants.

He had also been subjected to the same chants during a match in Spain in 2012.

In 2009 he was also pelted with a banana by a racist football fan in Rome prior to a European Under-21 Championships match.

After the news broke Other football fans took to Twitter to blast the vile abuse Balotelli suffered.

Hassan Navas tweeted: "Vile disgusting prawn munching racist animals ....hope they get locked up!"

While Kim Moore posted: "I'm a UTD supporter, totally sickened and disgusted- this isnt banter, or even anger, pure racial hatred".

United had been leading 3-1 against Leicester after 57 minutes in the away match at the King Power Stadium.

But in the space of 25 minutes the newly promoted side incredibly scored four goals against the 2012/13 Premier League champions.

United, managed by new boss Louis van Gaal, spent an incredible £150million in the transfer window trying to rejuvenate their fortunes.

The club finished seventh placed in England's top flight last year in the first season following legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.
